MODERN HISTORY
WHAT IS MODERN HISTORY ABOUT?
Modern history is concerned with the study of the events and people that have shaped our modern world. In our study, we explore ideas and concepts through historical sources. We investigate the reasons why people and groups have behaved the way that they have and the consequences of this behaviour. We then draw connections between these actions and the way that the world we live in functions.
Through our study, we are able to develop our knowledge and understanding of the modern world within a personal, local, national and global context. Source analysis lies at the foundation of the study of Modern History and throughout the course, students are exposed to the complexities associated with the changing nature of them and how these sources can be used to present specific points of view and manipulate ideas.
JUST SOME OF THE TOPICS YOU MAY STUDY...
The topics and areas of study are guided by the requirements of the syllabus. Within this, students are given the opportunity to explore a broad range of topics that suit the interests of the cohort. At CHS, we have devised a program of study that builds on the knowledge and understanding of those areas studied in Stage 4 and 5. All students studying Modern History in NSW must study at least one topic that focuses on Asia. In Stage 6 we also study a series of case studies and topics that explore the history of the modern world through national studies, areas of peace and conflict and the nature of the changes that occur in this period of history.
YEAR 11
Investigating the Modern World: We investigate the nature of modern history through the groups, individuals, events or concepts that have shaped our world. We then use case studies to explore specific areas of history. We explore the ideas that are associated with the development of our world.
YEAR 12
Core study – Power and Authority in the Modern World: Focusing on the nature of power and authority and a broader transnational perspective, we investigate the rise of fascist, totalitarian and militarist movements after World War I.
WHO SHOULD CHOOSE MODERN HISTORY?
People who have an interest in the world that we live in and the forces that shape the present day would benefit from studying Modern History. The focus on developing skills in understanding the motivations of individuals and groups, and ideas and their impacts develops further the understanding of the modern world.
